Why off-grid heating is different

Heating oil (kerosene)
Running cost: approximately 9.9p per delivered kWh (August 2026 average, 90% efficient condensing boiler).

Installation cost: a new oil condensing boiler costs £2,000 to £4,000 installed. If you already have a tank and pipework, a boiler-only replacement is typically at the lower end.
Heating oil is the incumbent fuel for most UK rural properties. It is well understood, widely supported by local engineers and available throughout the country. The main drawbacks are price volatility (oil tracks the global crude market), the need to manage deliveries and tank levels, and a higher carbon intensity than electrified alternatives.

LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
Running cost: approximately 11 to 13p per delivered kWh (2026), depending on contract and supplier.
Installation cost: a new LPG condensing boiler costs £2,000 to £4,500 installed. Tank rental or purchase adds to the cost.
LPG is supplied in a bulk tank (rented from a supplier) or in cylinders for lower-demand properties. It burns more cleanly than kerosene and is generally slightly more expensive per kWh. Most gas-burning appliances can run on LPG with a conversion kit, which gives some flexibility.
LPG suppliers often require customers to sign long-term supply contracts, which limits the ability to shop around. Prices have historically been higher than heating oil. LPG is better suited to properties where oil delivery access is difficult, or for those who want to use gas-type appliances (ranges, hobs) alongside central heating.
Air source heat pumps (ASHP)
Running cost: approximately 5 to 7p per delivered kWh (at a Coefficient of Performance of 2.8 to 3.5 and the current electricity unit rate of approximately 24p/kWh). Running costs depend heavily on the system design and property insulation.
Installation cost: £8,000 to £15,000 for a fully installed system. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides a grant of £7,500 toward the cost of an air source heat pump in 2026, reducing the net cost significantly for eligible properties.
Heat pumps work by extracting heat from outside air and moving it inside — they produce 2.5 to 3.5 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. They are most efficient in well-insulated properties with low-temperature heat distribution (underfloor heating or large radiators). Older rural properties with poor insulation and standard radiators may find heat pumps less effective without first investing in insulation upgrades.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP)

Installation cost: £15,000 to £30,000+, depending on whether horizontal trenches or vertical borehole loops are used. The BUS grant of £7,500 also applies to ground source heat pumps.
Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground via buried loops. They are more efficient than air source systems but significantly more expensive to install due to groundworks. They are most suitable for properties with large gardens (for horizontal collectors) or sufficient land value to justify the cost of vertical boreholes. The higher efficiency makes them attractive for large, high-consumption properties where the additional running-cost saving relative to ASHP is meaningful.
Biomass boilers
Running cost: approximately 5 to 8p per delivered kWh using wood pellets (2026 market price). Wood chip and log systems can be cheaper per kWh but require more storage and manual management.
Installation cost: £10,000 to £25,000 depending on system size and fuel type. There is currently no government grant equivalent to the BUS for biomass in 2026, following the closure of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.
Biomass boilers burn wood pellets, wood chip or logs. They are considered low-carbon if the fuel comes from sustainably managed sources. They are most suited to rural properties with fuel storage space (pellet silos or log stores) and those with access to local wood fuel suppliers. Running a biomass system requires more active management than oil or heat pumps — fuel deliveries, ash removal and periodic cleaning. They are a good fit for estates, farms and rural businesses rather than low-maintenance second homes.
