How we make money

The short version

Compare My Heating Oil is free for consumers to use. We have one affiliate partnership: Certas Energy pays us for a featured listing, shown at the top of our results and of every location page and in the bar at the foot of every page. A featured listing is advertising space that a supplier buys. It is labelled as a paid placement wherever it appears, and it is not a verdict: we hold no prices and no review scores, so nothing here is a claim that the featured supplier is cheapest or best. No other supplier pays us anything, the rest of every list is alphabetical, and nothing a supplier pays changes the facts we publish about it or the price you are quoted.

Current position

Since 30 August 2026 we have had an affiliate partnership with Certas Energy, which holds the featured listing at the top of our supplier results, on every county and town page, and in the bar at the foot of every page. The card carries a "Paid placement" label, the bar is marked as an ad, and Certas Energy's profile carries a "Featured partner" label.

That position is the only thing money buys here. Certas Energy appears in the same directory as everyone else, described using the same verified fields, checked against the same sources. The reasons given on the featured card are all facts recorded in our supplier data with a source behind them, so you can weigh the recommendation on the evidence rather than on our say-so.

No other supplier pays us. Every other supplier shown on this site is included solely because they are a genuine heating oil retailer operating in the UK, and they appear in alphabetical order.

How our affiliate partnership works

An affiliate partnership is an arrangement in which a supplier pays us when we send them a customer who then makes contact or places an order, and in our case also pays for the featured position that sends them. In plain terms: we may earn a commission when someone buys through our link, at no extra cost to you. The price you are quoted is the supplier's own and is not increased because you arrived from here. That is the difference between this site and an ordering site such as BoilerJuice: they take your order and place it with a supplier, so the company you pay is not the company that fills your tank. We never take the order. Every link here sends you to the supplier's own website or phone line, and you buy from them directly. The payment is variously called an affiliate fee, a referral fee or a commission; they mean the same thing here. The fee is agreed between us and the supplier and is entirely separate from the price you pay for your heating oil - suppliers cannot pass the fee on to you, and we do not add it to your quoted price.

What is sold is the featured listing: the single card at the top of the results and of each location page, and the bar at the foot of every page, both currently held by our affiliate partner Certas Energy. The copy in that listing is written to sell, the way any advertisement is, and the claims in it are the supplier's own published claims about what they offer. Links to Certas Energy go to the affiliate network that handles the arrangement, which passes you straight on to Certas. The link carries a label for the page you clicked from, such as the county page or a guide, so the network can report which pages produce orders. It carries nothing about you. We keep no record of the click ourselves, so the network's reporting is the only record either of us has. We hold no prices for Certas Energy and show none, which is a condition of the partnership. It is labelled as a paid placement every time it appears. Nothing else on the site can be bought. The suppliers below the featured card are listed alphabetically, and a supplier that pays us a fee cannot move up among them, be added to an area it does not serve, or have an unfavourable fact removed.

Any affiliate partner is marked with a "Featured partner" label on their profile page, the featured card carries a "Paid placement" label every time it appears, and the bar at the foot of every page is marked as an ad. The label is persistent - it does not disappear once you have seen it once.

What we will never do

  • Show a paid position without labelling it as paid, on the card itself rather than in the small print
  • Reorder the suppliers below the featured card for money - that list is alphabetical and stays that way
  • Exclude a supplier, or drop it down a page, because it does not pay us
  • Hide or obscure an affiliate partnership, or describe a paid position as an editorial one
  • Accept payment to alter a supplier's written profile or remove a verified fact
  • Claim a paid supplier is cheapest, best rated or independently ranked - we hold no price or review data on any supplier
  • Pass any cost of a referral arrangement on to you

Other potential revenue

We may in future carry display advertising on some pages. Any advertising will be clearly labelled as such and will not influence editorial content or supplier rankings.

We do not and will not sell your personal data to suppliers or third parties for marketing purposes.
