How we make money

The short version

Compare My Heating Oil is free for consumers to use. At the time of writing we do not have a commercial relationship with any supplier listed on this site. In future - or at any time - we may earn a referral fee from some suppliers when a customer makes contact or places an order after clicking through from our site. If and when that happens, the fee is paid by the supplier and costs you nothing.

Current position

Right now, Compare My Heating Oil does not receive payment of any kind from any heating oil supplier. We are not compensated for listing, ranking or mentioning any company. Every supplier shown on this site is included solely because they are a genuine heating oil retailer operating in the UK.

This may change. The section below explains what the model would look like if and when we introduce commercial arrangements.

How referral fees work (if introduced)

A referral fee is a payment from a supplier to us when we send them a customer who then makes contact or places an order. It is sometimes called a commission or an affiliate fee. The fee is agreed between us and the supplier and is entirely separate from the price you pay for your heating oil - suppliers cannot pass the fee on to you, and we do not add it to your quoted price.

We would only enter referral arrangements with suppliers who agree to our ranking rules: all suppliers are ranked by price, not by commercial relationship. A supplier that pays us a referral fee gets exactly the same treatment in our rankings as a supplier that pays us nothing.

Any supplier paying us a referral fee would be marked with a "Sponsored" label on their profile page. The label is persistent - it does not disappear once you have seen it once.

What we will never do

• Rank a supplier higher because they pay us
• Exclude a supplier because they do not pay us
• Hide or obscure a commercial relationship with a supplier
• Accept payment to alter a supplier's review score or written profile
• Pass any cost of a referral arrangement on to you

Other potential revenue

We may in future carry display advertising on some pages. Any advertising will be clearly labelled as such and will not influence editorial content or supplier rankings.

We do not and will not sell your personal data to suppliers or third parties for marketing purposes.
